“Being involved in NZT Power is a significant contract award for Barrier and aligns directly with our strategic growth plans.”

Barrier Group, a North East-headquartered industrial services and modular construction group with engineering operations in Teesside, has secured a key role in one of the UK’s most significant low-carbon infrastructure projects, highlighting the strength of the region’s industrial supply chain and its growing role in supporting the country’s net zero ambitions.

The company has been awarded a contract for NZT Power, which is set to be the world’s first commercial-scale gas-fired power station with carbon capture technology. The contract, awarded by Technip Energies, will see Barrier deliver the design, engineering and supply of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for the new power station Turbine Hall.

The project, delivered by a consortium led by Technip Energies with GE Vernova, alongside construction partner Balfour Beatty, will be responsible for the overall engineering, procurement and construction of the onshore power, capture and compression infrastructure.

Barrier’s work is being delivered from its North East operations, with its HVAC engineering team based at the Haverton Hill facility in Teesside, leading the engineering phase of the project.

The contract includes the design and engineering of turbine hall HVAC systems, procurement of specialist equipment and materials, and project management of the package during the engineering phase.

The turbine hall forms the central building within the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power station, where electricity will be generated from natural gas. Barrier’s HVAC systems will ensure the correct environmental conditions are maintained within the building, supporting both the safe operation of critical equipment and a safe working environment for personnel.

Barrier is currently delivering the engineering phase of the project, with around 10 people working directly on the contract, increasing to nearly 20 at the later stages. The award has already supported the recruitment of five additional engineering roles, strengthening the company’s HVAC engineering capability in the Tees Valley.

This project represents an important step in expanding its engineering services into major energy infrastructure and decarbonisation projects.

Kevin Judson, Operations Director at Barrier Group, said: “Being involved in NZT Power is a significant contract award for Barrier and aligns directly with our strategic growth plans. It reflects the strength of our engineering capability and the contribution businesses in the Tees Valley make to nationally important infrastructure projects.”

“This contract enables continued investment in our people and yard facilities, while supporting carbon capture infrastructure that is critical to the UK’s net zero ambitions and the long-term future of heavy industry.”

Barrier’s involvement in the project also supports its longer-term ambitions to expand operations from its River Tees yard and continue developing its engineering and modular construction capabilities to support large-scale industrial projects across the region.

Beyond supporting low-carbon power generation, the NZT Power project is expected to create and support more than 3,000 jobs during the construction phase, delivering long-term economic benefits for the Teesside region and strengthening the UK’s low-carbon energy infrastructure.
