North East-headquartered industrial services and modular construction group ranked first in the 2026 Ward Hadaway North East Fastest 50
Barrier Group has been crowned the North East’s Fastest Growing Business for 2026, as well as taking the Fastest Growing Large Business award in the 2026 Ward Hadaway North East Fastest 50.
The prestigious Ward Hadaway North East Fastest 50 Awards, held in association with The Journal, celebrate growth, innovation and the commercial achievements of businesses across the region.
Now in their 28th year, the awards recognise privately owned companies from across the North East that have continued to grow, invest and create opportunities. Based on financial data filed with Companies House, the list ranks the 50 best-performing companies which have consistently increased turnover over the past three financial years, whilst remaining profitable.
Barrier Group’s awards follow a significant period of growth and investment for the business, which also celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Founded in the North East in 1975, Barrier has grown from a specialist industrial painting and blasting business into a multi-disciplined turnkey engineering, design and build contractor operating across the UK and internationally. Its turnover has grown to more than £50 million, with a five-year expansion strategy focused on surpassing £100 million in global sales by 2030.

Growth has been supported by continued diversification into new sectors and markets, alongside investment in people, facilities and technical capability. Once heavily focused on oil and gas, Barrier now delivers projects across areas including offshore wind, power generation, marine, construction, petrochemicals and wider energy infrastructure.
The Group has also continued to invest in its North East operations. Its strategic quayside facility at Haverton Hill in Billingham is supporting major engineering and modular construction programmes, including work on the TenneT 2GW offshore wind programme. More recently, Barrier secured a contract to deliver HVAC engineering for NZT Power, supporting further expansion of its engineering capability in the Tees Valley.
Dave Alderson, Group Finance Director at Barrier Group, said: “Being awarded the North East’s Fastest Growing Business for 2026, as well as taking the Fastest Growing Large Business, is a fantastic achievement for the whole Barrier team and reflects the growth we have experienced over recent years. Our growth has been built over time. We have continued to diversify, invest in our people and facilities and develop the capabilities we need to take on larger and increasingly complex projects both in the UK and internationally.
“What is particularly important to us is that, as we grow, we continue to invest in the North East. We have a strong pipeline of work ahead of us, and our focus now is making sure we have the people, facilities and capacity in place to support the next stage of Barrier’s development.
“We are incredibly proud of our North East roots and to be recognised alongside so many other ambitious businesses from across the region.”
Damien Charlton, head of the commercial team at Ward Hadaway’s Newcastle office, said:
“Earning a place in the Fastest 50 is a significant achievement because it reflects sustained growth rather than the performance of a single year. Growing turnover while remaining profitable over three years takes good judgement, strong leadership and a clear understanding of where a business can make progress.
“Every company on this year’s list has its own story, but what they share is the ability to keep moving forward in conditions that are rarely straightforward. Barrier Group has shown that it can turn ambition into consistent commercial growth, and its place in the 2026 Fastest 50 is thoroughly deserved.”
Barrier’s latest growth strategy includes continued recruitment across design, engineering, fabrication, construction and outfitting, alongside further investment in its facilities and the delivery of a growing pipeline of major projects in the UK and overseas.
